It has been a long time since I started travelling the world, from my homeland country Spain.
I have visited every continent, courtesy of my current job as an employee for one of the leading airlines in the world. A couple of years ago, I had the chance to visit what for me, turned out to be possibly one of the most amazing places on earth – Uganda.
I have to admit that since childhood, I was fascinated by documentaries from different countries and cultures. When I started travelling, I always had this thing in my head, to be able to feel the heart of the world, and eventually I visited Uganda and its fabulous people took my heart.
As I arrived at Entebbe International Airport for the first time and looked outside the aircraft, I found great smiles and welcoming humankind. And looking up to the sky with its beautiful hues of blue and the green landscape, the first word that came to my head was: This is heaven!
The drive from the airport to the hotel on the shores of Lake Victoria just seemed to intensify my growing amazement; the splendour and majesty of the lake, surrounded by gentle rolling hills was difficult to explain in mere words. It was all simply magnificent!
Then there was the music in the background coming from speakers in the van which added another dimension that immersed one in the real African rhythm.
Once I reached my accommodation, I was impressed with the friendly people, apparently a characteristic, which I encountered at every step, welcoming and warm, friendly and smiling.
A range of uplifting emotions filled me as I surveyed the vista before me. The sparkling lake and rolling clouds on the horizon, fishermen casting their nets, the various bird calls. I decided to greet some of those fishermen and I ended up going in their boat, sharing some conversation and a good laugh at the same time. I was taking pictures of the beautiful birds and the landscapes in general.
In spite of being on the equator, the temperature was just perfect and the weather just fantastic due to the high altitude, which was perfect to do some training. After a good run, breathing clean air, I ended up in a local market buying some fresh fruit.
Later, it was time to taste some local food such as grilled tilapia with matooke, and a Nile beer to wash it all down. Do not forget, a cold beer is a definite must for a Spanish. It was a perfect dinner, which I greatly enjoyed after an intense day.
Since that first visit, a few years back, I have returned several times to Uganda, and every time I rediscover the kindness of its people, the beautiful landscapes, deepening my belief it is a perfect country for a holiday.
Visit its national parks, enjoy its beauty as a whole, and keep finding at every step the friendly and warm people of this beautiful country.
As for myself, I always get the same feelings of excitement and wonder and the resolve to come back again and again!
For now, let me just say: ‘Hasta luego’.
